PaperPlanes
Planes – nowadays a symbol of shame (the keyword being ‘flight shame’) and pollution to the privileged in Western society, it provides a projection screen for the dreams of other, less privileged people: Flying as a sign of upward mobility. Yet, who is allowed to fly? Whose dreams must remain grounded? The participatory PAPERPLANES performance installation wants to confront the Western audience with the ethics of flying in a globalized world. The stories and poems made as part of this project collect political reflection on climate change and, in this context, on the relation between the West and the Global South. During the festival period, the installation of folded paper planes will continue to grow, with the stated aim of producing 15.000 pieces. This corresponds to the required amount in euros in a bank account needed to be able to apply for a European student visa. Together with the audience, PAPERPLANES wants to work on a future beyond the capitalist structures of the West – on a future that is based on hope and solidarity.
